The role

As the Engineering Manager of the Embedded Platform and Sensors team, you will lead the development of the critical software infrastructure bridging embedded hardware systems and the high-level applications of Wayve's autonomous vehicle fleet. Your leadership will drive the stability, security, and utility of Wayve's platform support while ensuring seamless integration of hardware components, sensor systems, and software. This role demands a strong technical background in both the hardware and software of embedded systems, paired with the ability to negotiate and align technical roadmaps with diverse stakeholders.

Success in this role will have a far-reaching impact, ensuring that Wayve’s operating systems, sensor integration, and hardware/software interfaces remain robust and future-proof, laying the foundation for cutting-edge autonomous vehicle performance.

Challenges You Will Own

The Embedded Platform and Sensors team is at the intersection of hardware and software, tasked with delivering reliable system interfaces for autonomous vehicle operation. As the Engineering Manager, you will:

  1. Team Leadership and Strategic Oversight
    • Build and lead a multidisciplinary team of experts in Linux builds, sensor drivers, networking, and camera systems.
    • Define and execute the team’s roadmap in collaboration with stakeholders from the Hardware organization and application-layer teams.
    • Set clear objectives, foster collaboration, and ensure timely delivery of projects.
  2. Hardware/Software Integration
    • Oversee the development and maintenance of hardware-tailored operating systems to ensure compatibility and optimize performance.
    • Direct efforts to enable sensors, camera systems, and other hardware components for use by Wayve’s autonomous vehicle (AV) applications.
  3. Platform Security and Stability
    • Ensure robust system-level security, including networking and disk encryption.
    • Drive the team’s efforts to deliver secure and reliable OTA updates for the fleet.
  4. Vendor and Stakeholder Collaboration
    • Manage relationships with hardware vendors and align team deliverables with business and technical requirements.
    • Act as the interface between the team and other organizations, negotiating priorities and deliverables.
  5. Technical Mentorship and Talent Development
    • Recruit, mentor, and grow your team, cultivating technical excellence.
    • Identify skill gaps and facilitate training to meet the evolving needs of the team.

About you

Essential:

  • Proven Leadership: At least 5 years in a leadership role within software development, including 3 years managing teams working on embedded systems or hardware/software integration.
  • Technical Expertise: Hands-on experience with Linux- or QNX-based systems and embedded software development. Proficiency in at least one relevant programming language, such as C++, or Rust.
  • Experience in Hardware/Software Integration: Demonstrated ability to deliver software solutions bridging hardware and high-level applications.
  • Strategic Acumen: Proven ability to define, negotiate, and execute technical roadmaps.
  • Collaborative Abilities: Exceptional communication skills to effectively liaise with hardware teams, application developers, and other stakeholders.
  • Educational Background: A degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

Desirable:

  • Automotive Sensor Expertise: Experience working with automotive sensors and technologies like cameras, LiDAR, or radar.
  • Platform Development: Experience with embedded GPUs, Yocto builds, SOC-specific libraries (e.g., CUDA on Orin), or similar technologies
  • Educational Excellence: A Master’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
