The Role
As Wayve grows across continents, we're seeking a Network & Infrastructure Engineer to take ownership of our Japan infrastructure and network operations. This is not a siloed role—it's a highly collaborative position where you'll serve as the key technical owner for network and site infrastructure, working closely with:
- Our central networking team in London
- IT support engineers in the US, UK and Japan
- Global cloud infrastructure teams
You’ll thrive here if you enjoy solving complex infrastruture challenges, and helping scale systems to support AI development and autonomous vehicle testing around the world.
🌐 Network Operations & Site Infrastructure
- Design, deploy, and maintain wired and wireless networks, VPNs, VLANs, and firewall policies in Japan.
- Serve as local owner of networking and infrastructure—resolving outages, optimizing performance, and supporting new deployments.
- Work hand-in-hand with London-based network engineers to uphold configuration consistency, observability, and security.
🤝 Cross-Team Collaboration
- Act as the first line of engineering-level support for infra and networking queries raised by on-site and remote teams.
- Collaborate with cloud infrastructure teams to ensure seamless hybrid connectivity between on-prem and cloud environments.
- Foster a customer-centric culture by being approachable, communicative, and committed to resolving problems quickly and effectively.
- Engage with technical and non-technical teams alike, ensuring clear communication and empathy in every interaction.
- Act as a bridge between local site needs and global infrastructure goals, contributing to a consistent, scalable technical footprint.
⚙️ Automation & Tooling
- Support automation of network configurations and site setup using Infrastructure-as-Code tools like Terraform and Ansible.
- Contribute to documentation, scripts, and internal tooling to make infra operations repeatable and reliable.
🔒 Security & Standards
- Implement and maintain secure access controls, certificate management, and encryption practices aligned with Wayve’s InfoSec guidelines.
- Ensure local networking and infrastructure follow global security and compliance standards.
🚀 Scalability & Growth
- Contribute to the global expansion of Wayve’s infrastructure footprint, providing input on new sites, vendor engagement, and site readiness.
- Support high-bandwidth environments for data offload and development workflows used by AI and autonomy teams.
What We’re Looking For
✅ Core Skills & Experience
- 5+ years of experience in infrastructure, networking, or DevOps roles.
- Strong command of networking protocols (TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS), routing/switching, and enterprise networking platforms (e.g., Juniper, Cisco, MikroTik).
- Hands-on Linux systems administration experience.
- Scripting ability in Bash and/or Python for automation and tooling.
- Modern version control experience (git or mercurial).
- Experience operating in hybrid on-prem + cloud environments (Azure preferred).
- Familiarity with IT security best practices, including VPNs, endpoint controls, and certificate management.
- Proven experience with Infrastructure-as-Code (e.g., Terraform, Ansible).
🧠 Problem Solving & Ownership
- Enjoys puzzle-solving and building efficient, scalable systems.
- Takes initiative and operates independently in a high-trust, low-oversight environment.
- Able to manage and prioritize tasks across stakeholders and sites.
🌍 Teamwork & Communication
- Comfortable working across time zones and cultures, especially UK-JP collaboration.
- Clear communicator who can document and explain technical concepts to engineers and non-engineers alike.
Nice to Have
- Exposure to fleet-based operations, data offloading infrastructure, or AI development environments.
- Certifications like Cisco CCNA, Juniper JNCIA, or equivalent are a plus.
